Head coach Arne Slot of Feyenoord looks on after the Dutch Eredivisie match between Go Ahead Eagles and Feyenoord at De Adelaarshorst on April 25, 2024 in Deventer, Netherlands. Liverpool and Feyenoord have reached an agreement in principle over a compensation package for Arne Slot to become Jurgen Klopp's successor. The compensation package is £7.7m, plus £1.7m in add-ons. Sporting coach Ruben Amorim had made Liverpool's shortlist, and despite the external noise over him, the club always maintained he was not the leading or preferred option. Suggestions that financial reasons were behind Amorim not being the frontrunner for the Anfield job has been termed fiction.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden on Saturday night will attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, giving the president a stage and primetime slot to needle the media and his rival former President Donald Trump. “I haven’t had a chance to watch the court proceedings because I’ve been campaigning,” Biden told supporters at a campaign reception in New York Thursday, according to pool reports. While Biden has delivered many of these speeches before, the stakes for what could be his last White House Correspondents’ Dinner are high. “He’s the entertainer.”Administration officials said Katzenberg led daily strategy sessions in the White House residence this week to tweak Biden’s comedy set drafted by longtime speechwriter Vinay Reddy. Biden administration officials said they sought to share that concern with Kelly O’Donnell, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association and senior White House correspondent for NBC News, and with Jost’s team in NBC’s entertainment division as well.

THE HUNTER, by Tana FrenchFour years ago in these pages, the critic Janet Maslin published a guide to “the essential Tana French.” For some of French’s fans, all the novels are essential. Unpredictability and a refusal to be boring are part of French’s talent, and they make the books (almost) as much fun to debate as they are to read. Instead, a rebellious, preteen outcast named Trey Reddy enlists his help in finding her missing brother. In “The Hunter,” Cal, two years older, is still living in Ardnakelty. Cal and Lena want Trey to stay well clear, but she has different ideas.

CNN —In early January, anyone who visited the ski resort village of Gulmarg in Indian-administered Kashmir with hopes of actually skiing was out of luck. A severe snow shortage, blamed on dry weather, threatened to derail the entire winter season, leaving both travelers and tourism operators disappointed. Regardless of whether you’re a full-time athlete or someone who enjoys skiing and snowboarding for fun, Gulmarg offers a winter experience like no other. Today, travelers headed for Asia’s highest ski resort can enjoy over 1,330 vertical meters (4,363 feet) of skiable terrain, with lifts offering access to four separate skiing zones on Mount Apharwat. Many of those visitors don’t ski but just ride up the gondola to play in the snow and take in the views at the top.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are critical of diversity and inclusion programs within the federal government and elsewhere, but they see recruiting women and minority candidates, along with veterans, as key to expanding their slim majority in November. “These are not run-of-the-mill generic Republicans," Hudson said. And so we’re using that same formula.”When asked what she makes of the House Republican focus on recruiting females and minorities, the chair of the campaign arm for House Democrats was skeptical. It's not just House Republicans seeking to end such programs. Hudson sidestepped on whether the focus on attracting female and minority candidates as House Republican candidates clashes with efforts to clamp down on diversity and inclusion programs within the federal government and elsewhere.

NASA scientists have found a powerful new gamma-ray signal coming from outside our galaxy. AdvertisementNASA astronomers have discovered an unexpected "signal" coming from outside our galaxy, which they can't explain. The scientists were analyzing 13 years of data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope when they noticed the mysterious signal. NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, illustrated here, scans the entire sky every three hours as it orbits Earth. NASA's unexpected discovery could help astronomers confirm or challenge ideas about how the dipole structure is created.

How Much Caffeine You Should Actually Have—and When
  + stars: | 2024-01-13 | by ( Sumathi Reddy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Caffeine can give us a boost, but too much can mess with our sleep and make us feel jittery. So how do we know what’s the right amount? Generally, government and health groups recommend that healthy adults consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day. That comes out to about four, 8-ounce cups of coffee, says Jennifer Temple , a professor of exercise and nutrition sciences at University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions.

(AP) — An attorney for the billionaire Haslam family called bribery allegations leveled by Warren Buffett's company a “wild invention” Thursday. The Haslam family — which includes Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and former Tennessee governor Bill Haslam — accused Berkshire last month of trying to understate Pilot’s earnings this year by changing its accounting practices. A senior executive who had been promised a bonus revealed that to the current Pilot CEO, according to Berkshire. Haslam’s side promises have forced the company to investigate and interrogate many of the key employees it relies on today to operate the company,” Lavoie said. In addition to Pilot, Berkshire owns an eclectic assortment of other businesses including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad and several major utilities along with a number of smaller manufacturing and retail businesses.

There’s some good news about flu season this year. Doctors and scientists don’t expect the worst. The flu season in the Southern Hemisphere, where the cold-weather illness period wraps up as we head into ours, often serves as a harbinger of what’s to come for us. There, cases picked up a little earlier than usual in some countries but didn’t result in an especially large number of hospitalizations and deaths, say public health experts and doctors.

The age women start taking menopausal hormone therapy and the kind they take might affect their chances of developing dementia later in life, a new study found. Women have struggled for years with whether to take hormone therapy when they go through menopause. The medication can help relieve troubling symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. However, years of conflicting research on whether the therapy can lead to other health problems, including breast cancer, dementia and heart attacks, has left many women confused about what to do.

Astronomy aficionados are buzzing about a bright new comet. The ball of dust and ice is formally named C/2023 P1, but is also called Comet Nishimura, for Hideo Nishimura, the Japanese photographer who first spotted it. How was the comet discovered? Mr. Nishimura captured the comet on Aug. 12 while imaging the sky before sunrise with a digital camera — the third comet he has discovered. That’s exactly how scientists discovered Comet NEOWISE in 2021, which was named for the NASA space telescope that detected it, the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer.
